Representative of German Industry and Trade

The Representative of German Industry and Trade (RGIT) is the liaison of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) and the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) in Washington, DC. RGIT represents their interests vis-à-vis the U.S. government and the U.S. Congress, and reports and advises on a variety of economic policy issues and developments in German-American relations.

Policy Manager, Technology & Economic Security

POSITION OVERVIEW

RGIT is seeking a Policy Manager to lead its work on U.S. technology policy, export controls, and economic security. This is a government affairs role for an early-mid career policy professional who combines analytical rigor with practical knowledge of U.S. and EU regulatory processes. The Policy Manager will produce substantive analysis for senior German industry executives, engage U.S. policymakers and think tank counterparts, and represent RGIT across Washington’s transatlantic policy community. The position is well-suited to a candidate with a think tank, government affairs, or policy research background who is eager to work at the intersection of transatlantic trade, technology governance, and national security. The position involves periodic travel (approximately 10–20%) and attendance at evening events.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Policy Analysis & Writing

  • Monitor, analyze, and synthesize U.S. legislative and regulatory developments in technology policy, including AI regulation, semiconductor and dual-use export controls, and economic security measures.
  • Produce weekly policy updates, briefing papers, and longer analytical pieces for executive-level audiences and public distribution, translating complex policy developments into actionable insights for German industry stakeholders.
  • Track relevant rulemaking at BIS, USTR, Commerce, Treasury (OFAC/CFIUS), and key Congressional Committees, and assess implications for German firms operating in the U.S. market.

Stakeholder Engagement & Representation

  • Build and maintain relationships with U.S. government officials, Congressional staff, industry associations, and the transatlantic think tank community.
  • Represent RGIT at public events and private roundtable discussions; coordinate RGIT’s engagement with key partners on both sides of the Atlantic.
  • Support advocacy efforts by reviewing position papers and coordinating formal submissions on federal regulations and legislation with principals in the German business community.

Executive Briefings & Communications

  • Brief visiting delegations of German industry executives and government officials on relevant developments in U.S. economic policy.
  • Prepare meeting materials, talking points, and readouts for senior leadership engagements with policymakers and industry leaders.

Event & Program Coordination

  • Plan and execute policy events, roundtables, and delegation visits, including logistics, speaker coordination, and agenda development.
  • Support travel planning for senior RGIT and BDI/DIHK leadership visiting Washington.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, economics, public policy, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience in policy, government affairs, think tank research, or similar.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. technology and trade policymaking institutions and processes, including executive branch agencies and relevant congressional committees.
  • Working knowledge of German and EU politics, institutions, and transatlantic relations.
  • Professional-level proficiency in German (spoken and written); English fluency required.
  • Experience preparing and delivering briefings or presentations for senior or executive-level audiences.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, structured policy analysis under deadline.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Familiarity with export control regimes (EAR, ITAR) and economic security frameworks (CFIUS, Entity List).
  • Experience with event management or delegation travel coordination.
  • Existing relationships within Washington’s transatlantic policy community.
