German Dual Apprenticeships in Focus


Freya Lemcke, Vice President of the Representative of German Industry and Trade, spoke at the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation’s (ITIF) event “Workforce Retraining: What America Can Learn From the World's Leaders” on Thursday, February 16th in Washington, DC. In her presentation, Ms. Lemcke pointed out the advantages and success factors of the German apprenticeship system. Cooperation among administrators, companies, and universities are a prerequisite to assure that the various training programs are comparable to each other and practical oriented no matter where the training occurs. She also mentioned the numerous efforts German American Chambers of Commerce are undertaking in the field of dual apprenticeships. The event was opened by Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Thom Tillis (R-NC). Other speakers included Monika Elsik (Head of the WIFI Austria), Becky Klein-Collins (Vice President of the Research and Policy Development Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, Chicago), and Chris Paynter (Dean of the Central Piedmont Community College).
